Introduction:
On December 6, 2025, I went to a Science Olympiad competition at James Clemens High School. It was my first science competition in middle school, which made it exciting but also a little nerve-wracking. As we arrived, the school was full of students from different schools preparing for their events. Even though it was my first competition, I felt confident because I had practiced and prepared beforehand, and I was excited to see how I would do.
Events:
The events that I tried out were called Metric Mastery and Hovercraft. In Metric Mastery, we had to estimate different metric units, including height, weight, length, angle, and even temperature. This event tested how well we understood metric measurements and how accurately we could make estimates. In Hovercraft, we had to design and build a hovercraft that could successfully float. This event focused more on creativity, engineering, and problem-solving, making it both challenging and interesting.
Awards:
Overall, my middle school placed first in the competition. In the Metric Mastery event, our school placed second, which earned my partner and me a prize. Unfortunately, in the Hovercraft event, our team was disqualified because we did not follow the required safety guidelines. Even though that was disappointing, it was still a valuable learning experience.
